Whoever you are, you have probably struggled at some point in your life with feelings of inadequacy or low self esteem. Sometimes this happens as a result of our childhood. We may have internalized, because of adults or peers in our lives, the idea that we were somehow unworthy. Sometimes, low self esteem comes later in life as the result of a broken relationship or the loss of a job. Sometimes we feel stifled by our lack of money or our station in life. No matter what caused our feelings, all of us could, at some point, use some ideas of how to build self confidence.
People often feel that their own emotions are beyond their control. If you feel bad because of outside people or events, you might think that the solution to your bad feelings can only come from the outside as well. That is simply not true. You can do many things to raise your own confidence level and improve your state of mind. Here are some places to start.
Exercise
I cannot stress enough what a huge difference exercise can make in your state of mind. Even if you only work in a couple of workouts a week, you will notice changes. And if you manage thirty minutes to an hour three or four times a week, it could be revolutionary. Exercise makes your body feel wonderful. The more you work out, the easier the workouts become, and the more you can do. Your increased strength will make you feel confident and powerful.
Pinpoint Something You Do Well.
We often make the mistake of focusing only on the things we wish we could do, and ignoring the things we can do. I don;t care who you are, there is something that comes naturally to you, something you do well without having to struggle too hard. Some people can sing. Some people can cook. Some people can write. If you find this thing, and work on it, you will experience the joy of accomplishing something easily. That joy can channel itself into energy that can help you with things that are more challenging.
Take Pride In the Way You Look
For many people, depression leads to the neglect of hygiene, grooming and appearance. Depressed people often feel that they lack the energy to make themselves look good. The problem is, this only increases our feelings of unworthiness. If you don't like your own appearance, then you have no reason to believe that others will like it. Looking in the mirror and being disappointed with what you see only exacerbates low self esteem. Take the time to take care of yourself. Wear colors that make you happy. Treat your appearance as a work of art, and you will be pleasantly surprised each time you pass a store window or mirror.
We all wonder how to build self confidence. Making changes in our lives can certainly help, but one of the best ways is to work with what you have. You, as you are, are already good enough. So, as the old saying goes, "get in where you fit in." Loving yourself as you are will lead to positive change.
